As our name suggests a fearsome tropical fish known for its impressive size and ferocious nature, we thought we’d better live up to our name. It seems that we don’t disappoint.
In love with too many styles to specialise in just one, Barracwda pays tribute to samba, to reggae and to the sounds of the NE of Brazil. Offering it all up with harmonised, folkloric and ancestral songs, we aim to take you on a journey, turning up the temperature with a little Jungle and DnB to end the party!
Barracwda drum, sing and move with synchronised and infectious energy and as we’re particularly fond of a bit of audience participation, you never quite know what you’re going to get.

After over 3 decades, still expect the unexpected exciting mix of traditional and new rhythms grafted together. For 35 years the Galêz family have been trying to get the grooves right, whilst metrically modulating 7/4 into 3/4 et cetera, but always keeping it funky.
This time we will bring you a compact set from Brazil to Cuba and from West to East Africa via the northern hemisphere.
Samba Galêz dance is a diverse, inclusive, and dynamic group performing a fusion of choreography inspired by samba, samba reggae, street, Afrobeat, West African, Afro-Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban traditions in step with the Samba Galêz repertoire.

Disgwyliwch yr annisgwyl! Mae teulu Samba Galêz wedi bod yn perffeithio’r “Groove” ers tair degawd, yn trawsgyweirio rhythmau 7/4 i 3/4 yn ffynci a chŵl mewn cymysgiad cyffrous a chelfydd o rythmau traddodiadol a newydd.
Y tro yma fe ddown ni a set arbennig i chi gyda rhythmau o Brasil i Ci wa ac o Orllewin i Ddwyrain Africa trwy’r hemisffer gogleddol.
Mae grŵp dawns Samba Galêz yn amrywiol, cynhwysol a deinamig sy’n perfformio cyfuniad o goreograffi wedi’i ysbrydoli gan draddodiadau samba, samba reggae, stryd, Affrobît, Gorllewin Affrica, Affro-Brasil ac Affro-Ciwba yn unol â cherddoriaeth Samba Galêz.
BLOCO B, born out of Bristol’s Bloco dos Sujos (directed by Paul Baxter) in 2018, continues to teach, perform and celebrate Rio de Janeiro Carnival style samba under the new leadership of Terry Moore and musical director Matt Manley. Emphasis is on creating authentic versions of Rio samba tunes using rhythm, song, melody & dance. To achieve this they blend percussion & drumming (bateria) with singers, cavaquinho players and dancers.
BLOCO B plays samba as played in Rio de Janeiro & São Paulo where it is truly the popular art of the people. Some of our members visit Brazil to play & learn directly from some of the most highly regarded schools of samba in Rio, such as Portela. Samba cannot be separated from carnival so the band prepares itself to take part in events such as St Paul’s Carnival in Bristol, Notting Hill Carnival in London and, of course, Rio Carnival itself.
Honouring the musical traditions of this amazing music is at the heart of what it does and BLOCO B will challenge you not to move and be moved!
Mae BLOCO B, a aned allan o Bloco dos Sujos o Fryste (a gyfarwyddwyd gan Paul Baxter) yn 2018, yn parhau i ddysgu, perfformio a dathlu samba arddull Carnifal Rio de Janeiro o dan arweinyddiaeth newydd Terry Moore a’r cyfarwyddwr cerdd Matt Manley. Mae'r pwyslais ar greu fersiynau dilys o alawon samba Rio gan ddefnyddio rhythm, cân, alaw a dawns. I gyflawni hyn maent yn cyfuno offerynnau taro a drymio (bateria) gyda chantorion, chwaraewyr cavaquinho a dawnswyr.
Mae BLOCO B yn chwarae samba fel y'i chwaraeir yn Rio de Janeiro a São Paulo lle mae'n wirioneddol gelfyddyd boblogaidd y bobl. Mae rhai o'n haelodau'n ymweld â Brasil i chwarae a dysgu gyda rai o ysgolion samba mwyaf uchel eu parch yn Rio, fel Portela. Ni ellir gwahanu Samba oddi wrth garnifal, felly mae’r band yn cymryd rhan mewn digwyddiadau fel Carnifal St Paul’s ym Mryste, Carnifal Notting Hill yn Llundain ac, wrth gwrs, Carnifal Rio ei hun.
Mae anrhydeddu traddodiadau cerddorol y gerddoriaeth anhygoel hon wrth galon yr hyn y mae'n ei wneud a bydd BLOCO B yn perfformio miwsig i gyffroi'r enaid a'r traed!

Sam Alexander, started playing samba in 1985 with the London School of Samba, and in the years that followed was co-founder of Samba Gales and Bristol Samba He travelled to Brasil in 1990 and fell in love with Maracatu Staying there for 18 months he began a story with Recife and traditional culture and communities that has been part of his journey ever since.
He introduced Maracatu to the UK in 1993 when he co-founded Acorda Povo and this project led to the setting up of Maracatu Estrela do Norte in 2002 In the last 22 years the group has continued to spread the word about maracatu and the Afro Brazilian and indigenous culture of Recife, Pernambuco.
In 2017, the group changed its name to Baque de Axé as part of its affiliation to the great maracatu group from Recife, Nação de Maracatu Porto Rico which was first registered in 1916, but even then was called the old Maracatu Porto Rico. This connection with the community of the Bode, in the favela of Pina where The Nação de Maracatu Porto Rico is located has created such a strong link of mutual love support that the group is now stronger than ever.
Part of this is the connection with the terreiro Ylé Axé Oxossi Guangoubira (terreiros are afro-Brazilian places of worship) that is at the core of the maracatu, the community, the rhythms and resistance. Baque de Axé is proud to represent their Nação and Ylé at this encontro!
Dechreuodd Sam Alexander chwarae samba yn 1985 gyda’r London School of Samba, ac yn y blynyddoedd a ddilynodd roedd yn gyd-sylfaenydd Samba Gales a Bristol Samba. Teithiodd i Frasil yn 1990 a syrthiodd mewn cariad â Maracatu. Gan aros yno am 18 mis dechreuodd stori gyda Recife a diwylliant traddodiadol a chymunedau sydd wedi bod yn rhan o’i daith ers hynny.
Cyflwynodd Maracatu i’r DU ym 1993 pan gydsefydlodd Acorda Povo ac arweiniodd y prosiect hwn at sefydlu Maracatu Estrela do Norte yn 2002. Yn y 22 mlynedd diwethaf mae’r grŵp wedi parhau i ledaenu’r gair am Maracatu a diwylliant Affro Brasil a chynhenid Recife, Pernambuco.
Yn 2017, newidiodd y grŵp ei enw i Baque de Axé fel rhan o'i gysylltiad â'r grŵp maracatu gwych o Recife, Nação de Maracatu Porto Rico a gofrestrwyd gyntaf yn 1916, a elwid yr hen Maracatu Porto Rico. Mae'r cysylltiad hwn â chymuned y Bode, yn favela Pina lle mae'r Nação de Maracatu Porto Rico wedi'i leoli wedi creu cyswllt mor gryf o gefnogaeth cariad cilyddol fel bod y grŵp bellach yn gryfach nag erioed.
Rhan o hyn yw'r cysylltiad â'r terreiro Ylé Axé Oxossi Guangoubira (mae terreiros yn fannau addoli affro-Brasil) sydd wrth wraidd y maracatu, y gymuned, y rhythmau a'r gwrthiant. Mae Baque de Axé yn falch o gynrychioli eu Nação ac Ylé yn yr Encontro hwn!
