This workshop will develop your natural sense of rhythm and improve your ability to connect rhythms together.
Using BoomWhackers (tuned plastic batons) you will be taken through various techniques to develop and internalise a range of listening and attention skills which are useful for playing Samba and African-derived rhythms in a group.
This music depends on interlocking patterns and players’ ability to 'lock in' as opposed to the more Western tradition of 'counting'.
Essential structures will be revealed and deconstructed as you work through a series of rhythmic developments, building progressively from simple beats towards multi-layered polyrhythmic heaven.
Simon is an accomplished percussionist with over thirty years experience and is Musical Director of Samba Galêz.
Since building his first percussion set out of a deck chair, old wood, and library books, Simon has lived and studied drums and marimba in Tanzania (Bagamoyo College of Music) and Ghana, and congas in Cuba and the USA, most notably at the Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts.
Simon has performed as a percussionist around the UK and the world, including Europe, Brazil, Ecuador, and the USA.
